Tracy L. Friedel, PhD
Representative for Alberta Métis
Tracy participates on the IAMC-TMX as an Indigenous Caucus member representing Alberta Métis. Tracy is a proud âpihtawikosisânak ohci mânitow sâkahikanihk (Lac Ste. Anne Metis) and was elected in 2022 as President of the community’s representative organization, the Lac Ste. Anne Métis Community Association. From a young age, Tracy has enjoyed participating with her family undertaking culturally important land-based practices, such as commercial fishing, berry picking and other traditional land use activities. Tracy has spent her adult life working in educational contexts, including as a tenured Associate Professor at UBC-Vancouver and as Canada Research Chair Tier II at Mount Royal University. In her role as a Principal Applicant of CIHR grants, Tracy has led research focused on health, education, and other topics that are core to Indigenous wellbeing. Tracy continues to mentor the next generation of Indigenous researchers in her current role as an Affiliate Associate Professor at UBC-Vancouver.

“I opted to become involved as an IAMC member so as to ensure that the perspectives and local histories of Métis communities in Alberta would be rendered visible as it concerns the Trans Mountain Expansion Project and existing (1953) pipeline. The IAMC asks that First Nations, Métis and federal representatives collaborate to raise the bar on regulatory oversight regarding a specific project. I understand this to be a unique challenge and a significant opportunity.”
