Chief Councillor Judi Thomas

Representative for Western Approach

Judi Thomas is the Chief Councillor for Ditidaht First Nation part of the Nuuchah-nulth peoples on the west coast of Vancouver Island. As Chief Councillor and IAMC TM representative for the Western Approach, Judi is deeply rooted in her ancestral teachings and traditions, embodying a lifelong commitment to the land, the waters, and the people.

Guided by the principles of ƛuł (good governance), ʔuč̓aak (taking care of), iisaak (respect), and dubayaax̣ a c̓awaaʔk (everything is connected), Judi’s leadership is anchored in the understanding that the health of the land, the ocean, and the people are inseparable. She believes that stewardship is a responsibility and a sacred trust passed down through generations, and that every decision must honor the interconnectedness of all living things.

Judi’s approach to governance and resource management is shaped by a deep awareness of cumulative impacts—recognizing that every action on the land and water affects the whole.

She advocates for social license, ensuring that community voices are at the heart of decision-making, and that respect for traditional knowledge guides sustainable development. As an IAMC TMX representative, Judi works collaboratively with federal partners and other First Nations, championing a model of co-creation, coimplementation, and co-evaluation. She is committed to building relationships based on transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, ensuring that all partners move forward together in the spirit of reconciliation and stewardship.

Judi’s vision is one of unity and resilience: “We are all in this together. By listening to one another, honoring our ancestors, and working side by side, we can take care our lands and waters for future generations.” With gratitude for the wisdom of her Elders and ancestors, Judi continues to walk the path of leadership, nurturing hope, connection, and a sustainable future for Ditidaht and for people around the world.
