Marcel Shackelly

Representative for Mid-Fraser/Thompson

Marcel Shackelly is a long-standing member of the IAMC-TMX, having served since its inception. He currently represents the MidFraser/Thompson region and serves as Co-Chair of the IAMC Indigenous Monitoring Subcommittee. Marcel brings deep cultural knowledge and leadership experience rooted in his Nlaka’pamux heritage and lifelong connection to Nooaitch Indian Band.

Raised and residing on the Nooaitch reserve, Marcel is the son of Michael Shackelly of Nooaitch Indian Band and Daphne Shackelly of Lower Nicola Indian Band. His father, a fluent speaker of Nlakapamuxcin and former Chief for 14 years, was raised by his grandparents and entrusted Marcel from a young age to be his listener—a role that shaped Marcel’s collaborative and respectful approach to leadership. His mother, Daphne, was raised by her grandmother on a ranch before attending residential school, instilling in Marcel a deep appreciation for land-based traditions.

Marcel’s leadership reflects a commitment to cultural continuity, environmental stewardship, and intergenerational knowledge sharing. He believes the collaborative model of the IAMC-TMX echoes the vision of Nlaka’pamux leadership during the Fraser Canyon War of the 1850s—a vision of respectful resolution and shared governance.

Quote

“What I really love about where I live is that we have more than the four seasons, like: bitterroot season; dipnet season; and huckleberry season. This is how I grew up. I want my sons and future generations to experience it too.”
